Translanguaging is something that I have just been introduced to and am very inspired by. I feel as if we do not often hear of stories like the one told by Rodriguez, although it happens more than we think. It is extremely disheartening to know that one comment about language made by a teacher can lead to a boat load of troubles at home. Yet, translanguaging can solve a lot of language barrier discrepancies among the two environments (school & home). I think it is also important to realize that this concept does not only apply to bilingual students but one language students as well. It is never too early to learn another language, especially since it gets the brain working more and can help them in the long run. The link I attached includes all of the simple ways to incorporate this into a classroom no matter where or who you teach. In the words of a graduate professor, there are five steps to this:
1. Label objects in the classroom in multiple languages.
2. Give students of all language abilities their time to shine.
3. Stock your classroom with age-appropriate books and multimedia resources in the languages of your students.
4. When grouping students for collaborative work, allow students with the same native language to work together. This allows them to receive a full and deep understanding of the assignment.
5. Learn key words in your students native language.
Teachers should strongly consider these classroom ideas. A small change such as having 2+ labels on basic classroom vocabulary, such as doors, chairs, windows, etc., can enforce learning and comfort among students. Variations in reading books can be included as well. A step that I really like is number 2, "give students of all language abilities their time to shine". When a child feels equal and accepted no matter what the differences, they become more eager to be at school and learn. Translanguaging allows these kids the same opportunities to get up in front of the classroom and share work or complete homework at home in their comfort zone. This concept enables a higher capacity of learning among students and I really like the idea and hope to incorporate it myself.
